The Tennenets Story Board

Although i have story boarded a potential plan for my music video as my band is not manufactured and are actually a functioning band it will more then likely not play out the way i have story boarded it. This is for a number of reasons including location and the number of gigs the band will be doing in the time i have available to film.

However despite this i will continue to use the codes and conventions of the indie genre. such as fast pasted editing, shots of the band and close ups of them playing. As well as this i wanted a slightly rougher DIY look to my film similar to The Libertines and The Cribs.

The Tennents- Ain't life grand

He's a  Dickensian gent
But he's living in the twenty first century
He dont know what he's spent,
But he knows he's blown it going out
He wasn't dragged up
But society dragged him down,
the money's coming in,
so its time to buy another round
And yet he still comes to our place
Every now and again
Just to show off his face
And ask us how we've been
"Were doing fine mate. Are you taking care as well?"
"on this sunny afternoon its hard not to feel swell"

No he dont see what its not about, so he'll carry on
Just carry on without
Well ain't life grand
When the green's stacked in your hand. x2

A concience is what hurts when everything feels right
He didn't care for superstition
And still went out every night
A sunday evening and thirty quid gone down the drain
A distant kareoke only provokes rain.
And with a few knocked back and his confidence in full,
he swings  by to a group,
and goes in for the pull
" evening ladies, will you have a drink on me ?"
" make it a couple and you will have us on our knee's"

No he dont see what its not about, so he'll carry on
Just carry on without
Well ain't life grand
When the green's stacked in your hand. x2

Codes and Conventions of the Indie genre.

Indie music originated in the US and the UK around the early 1980s after the post punk revolution. Independent labels where set up in response to growing corporate greed between The big three major labels. The major labels often only gave bands/artist royalties of around 3% of the value of their album, and if there music was not commercial and to main stream audiences tastes they would often find it difficult to get signed. As a result many bands and artist went to independent labels such as Rough Trade and Domino, independent labels have a more 'do it yourself' attitude. The Bands that fall under the category of indie are bands such as The Pixies, The Hives, The Las, The Strokes, Bloc Party and Elastica.

Codes and Conventions of Indie music are things such as casual neutral clothing, and example of this is things such as polo shirts, skinny jeans, Parker's, Harrington's and doc martins or desert boots. Many indie bands often aper to dress casual and slightly scruffy. This represents the image surrounded with the genre of indie or indie rock music of being rebellious and angsty. as well as this it is supposed to show that the band/artist are not about the appearance or the money but the music they create by presenting them selves in such a basic non flashy manner.

Location is often key to the codes and conventions of the indie genre, many indie music videos are shot in dim locations such as clubs. Alternatively they are also shot in urban, working class or deprived areas. Examples of this are The Libertines - What became of the likely lads. An example of a performance video also by The Libertines is 'Can't stand me now'. Many indie label music videos include performance as both a marketing tool to show off the talents of the band and a way of representing the genre's 'do it yourself' home made style that portrays them as been all about the music and the live performance and them as show men not them as actors. Originally indie music consisted of little or no narrative videos, however recently performance videos are mixing with narrative as a new modern twist on the traditional  performance video. This brakes the codes and the conventions. Indie music videos normally contain or are souly biased on live performance because of the nature of been independent. independent labels do not have vast amounts of money to throw at bands/ artists music videos. As a result it has now become a genre code and convention for an independent artists music video to be slightly rough around the edges and have a more home made style.

Another convention of the Indie genre is part of the cinematography.  Traditionally performance videos (often used in the indie genre) include many close up shots, wide shots, two shots, over the shoulder, pans, low angles and shots of the crowd. Close up shots are used mainly on the lead vocalist  and of the guitarist playing their guitar. Close up shots are used to display the skill of the guitarist, this is what the audience wants to see. Close ups are taken of the singer as he is the front man of the band and often the figure the fans feel more of an affiliation towards, as mentioned before this is what the audience want to see from the artist. A music video is a marketing tool designed to cater to an audiences expectations.

Two shots are often used to establish a relationship between band members, this makes the band seem more of a solid unit rather then individual performers. Wide shots also do this although they are traditionally used towards the beginning of the video as the performers are more stagnant and so the audience can establish the members of the band. Low angel, pans and shots of the crowd are used to create atmosphere and dominance.

Jump cutting is also an editing trick heavily used throughout indie music videos, this is to represent the often fast paced style of the music and often the fast paced life's of the artists. also the harsh slightly jarring effect it gives also represents the persona that indie bands often have of been rebellious.

The origins of Indie Rock

Indie rock originally originated from the united kingdom and the united stated around the 1980's. it is an alternitive genre of of rock music and was originally used to describe record lables, however it also became assosiated with a style of music. Indie rock has many sub genres such as pop, jangle pop and lo fi to name but a few. With the punk rock revival and the introduction of brit pop into 1990's main stream music the term 'indie' was used to describe bands that remained un descovered and under the radar. However in the early 2000's with the introduction of the internet becoming more popular bands that had originaly not broken through mainstream music and had found little sucess suddenly became sucessful and enjoyed commercial sucess. However as a result tarnishing the meaningfulness of the term.

Indie means 'independant', the term is used to describe small low budget record lables with a do it yourself attitude. Independant lables in general strive to remain seperate from bigger more mainstream lables such as Sony and Warner Brothers in every aspect, however they often have to rely on mayor lables for production as they do not have to money to be able to set up there own production company. Independant lables allow artist and bands to explore emotions and styles limited in appeal to large mainstream audiences

Evaluation of skills developed over the length of the course

The project I did for my foundation portfolio was to create both a college magazine and a music magazine using my own image and  using  an image manipulation program, produce the front page of a new music magazine, featuring a photograph of a student in medium close-up plus some appropriately laid-out text and a masthead. As well as this I must produce a mock-up of a contents page and a double page spread.

Before coming to Wyke College I had little or no skills in any of the programs or soft wear I used before AS media studies. I had never used Photoshop or any other form of editing/ manipulation soft wear. I had however I could successfully use a camera.

As part of my creative process I firstly analysed existing magazines to grasp theme, colour schemes layout and fonts for a magazine of my music genre, then wrote up an evaluation of the running trends for each front cover, contents page and double page spread. I then posted a reader profile of my target audience to establish styles and interests of the potential buyers of my magazine, by doing this it helped me to create a magazine tailored towards the likes and needs of my audience. An example of this is the aggressive edgy colour scheme and font on my final draft, typically used in indie rock magazine; the main inspiration I took for this was from NME. You can see this and my font is black orange and white, almost identical to the colour scheme of NME as it is associated with the genre. To reach my final draft I went through a series of drafts using different images, font’s colour schemes and layouts. This helped to generate a successful outcome.

Although I had already used Photoshop is our transitional college magazine I didn’t do any editing in that time, I only used the program for layout purposes. As a result I found that as the year progressed I learnt new skills which can be seen throughout my foundation portfolio at AS when compared to the original pulmonary task of the college magazine. I used these skills that I had learnt both from collage and from YouTube tutorials to refine the images I had taken on the Panasonic camera; I did this by using the program Photoshop. An example of this is skin editing, I did this by making 3 copies of the original image. The first copy was so I wasn’t adding any changes to the original background layer. The second copy of the original layer I named ‘Colour’, I then went to blur-> Gaussian blur and reduced the opacity to 2.0. I then changed the name of the third original layer copy to ‘texture’ and subtracted the background. After this I selected the colour layer and selected the duplicate tool and I set the expositor to 14% and began to create a more even skin tone.

I then switched to the texture layer and selected the patch tool. And put a ring around any spots or blemishes and dragged it to a more clear area of skin.

After removing all the blemishes and imperfections I then created two new layers and filled them with 50% grey. I called one dodge and the other burn.

I then highlighted the dodge layer and selected the dodge tool and began by adding highlights to the pupils and the whites of the eyes. Then I began to lighten the bags under the eyes and down the nose and the edges of the face.

Following this I selected the burn layer and using the Burn tool I added back the low lights to the pupils, eye lids, eyebrows, cheek bones and the edge of the forehead near the hair line.

Skin manipulation is essential to all magazines not just music magazines’ the purpose of skin editing is to refine the image and give the subject a more even skin tone as well as get rid of spots and dark circles around the eyes. This gave the image a more professional look and was a necessary feature for my magazine. My set of skills developed throughout the process, after successfully creating an even skin tone I then moved on to hair editing.

Hair editing is processes in which you create a vector mask over the top of a copy of the original photograph, you then use quick selection to select the outline of the hair. Set the settings to soft light and changed the colour; I didn’t make any real drastic changes the colour of the hair in the image as I wanted to keep a more natural appearance. The reason I did this was because I felt it would be more genre appropriate for the artist that featured on my magazine to have darker hair.

Another example of how my set of skills developed throughout my foundation portfolio can be seen on my double page spread. To create my double page spread I have to use the program fireworks. I had never before used fireworks before stating Wyke College but as seen in my portfolio I successfully created a double page spread. I did this by importing the background I had previously created in Photoshop which I then placed in fireworks, after doing so I then set the font so it would be written in columns of three like many magazine articles, I then wrote the article making sure I placed pull quotes in a bolder bigger font throughout. After this I then used the font on the front cover and the contents page to create continuity as it follows the conventions of a magazine.

To conclude my skills have developed throughout the lengthy process of my foundation portfolio  showing how I can both use a range of technology’s to create my final outcome  and show the planning stages I went through in which to get there.

The thing I like most about this video is the clever use of editing, it is too the beat and gives an interesting dynamic to the song. I also like the use of slow motion and the flashes of colour used. I think the style of this video is one I would look to use for my own music video.

Bloc Party's Video For Octopus opens with the sound of yawning and sighing and a Medium shot of the drummer, however the sound is not synced with the drummer. This shot went on for 0-5 seconds till the song kicked in. From five-second to six-seconds the next shot is a close up of the guitarist playing guitar cut and then speeded up and repeated several times edited to the beat. This contrasts heavily with the yawing at the beginning of the song. The fast editing style used in the second shot and throughout the video is appropriate to the genre of the band (indie Rock).

The next series of shots are bright block colours that flash on the screen from between six-seconds and seven-seconds before going to the next preformance wide shot of the drummer cutting to the beat of the same shot but with a slightly different zoom. the background of the video has a sparse industrial/ grunge feel. Decaying paint is style heavily associated with grunge. other then that there is not much else other then piled up amps, this is also something used heavily in rock music video.

This is then followed by several more quick shots of flashing black primary colours. After this there is a close up low angles shot of the guitarist playing guitar, once again juddering backwards and forwards in time with the beat of the music. close up shots are Typical of preformance videos and are part of the codes and conventions.

The prefomance shots are once again broken up by shots of flashing colour before returning to a close up of the guitarist playoing guitar but from a different angle. this shot is repeted several times and spead up so it is in time with the music.

Audience Key Terms

Qualitive Data- Qualitative methods are ways of collecting data which are concerned with describing meaning, rather than with drawing statistical inferences. What qualitative methods (e.g. case studies and interviews) lose on reliability they gain in terms of validity. They provide a more in depth and rich description.

Quantative Data- Quantitative methods are those which focus on numbers and frequencies rather than on meaning and experience. Quantitative methods (e.g. experiments, questionnaires and psychometric tests) provide information which is easy to analyse statistically and fairly reliable. Quantitative methods are associated with the scientific and experimental approach and are criticised for not providing an in depth description.

Demographic Data- are current statistical characteristics of a population. These types of data are used widely in sociology (and especially in the subfield of demography), public policy, and marketing. Commonly examined demographics include gender, race, age, disabilities, mobility, home ownership, employment status, and even location. Demographic trends describe the historical changes in demographics in a population over time (for example, the average age of a population may increase or decrease over time). Both distributions and trends of values within a demographic variable are of interest. Demographics are about the population of a region and the culture of the people there.

Psychographic Data- Psychographic information, as opposed to demographic information, isn't quantifiable with numbers. Psychographics define how the target market feels, what they want, how they go about their day to day lives, what is important to them and how they make purchasing decisions. Psychographic information derives from demographics, and can only be created after a demographic profile has been created.

Summery of Summer work

Over the summer i started my reasearch into my music video firstly by writing up the breif and then by looking at existing music videos associated with the genre of music i have chosen to represent. I then selected songs i liked and thought where appropriate and genre specific. Once i had selected these songs i then posted it on my blog and wrote a paragraph of background history about the band/artist and what is was about the song or video i thought was usefull for my A2 project.I then did a short Go animate on whitch music genre of music i would be covering and stated some of my idea and associateions of the music genre. Following this i did a brief history on music videos.

The history of music videos

A music video is a short film that accompanies a song usually as a visual marketing device. An early example of this is St louis blues by Bessie Smith in 1929, the dramatised performance was shown in theatres till 1932. Although is is claimed that the earliest music videos where made in the 1950's that is not actually the case as walt disney developed the animated film fantasia based around a piece of classical music and labeled it as visual music.

in 1956 Tony Bennet filmed a music video of him walking through Hyde pro london to accompany his song 'A stranger paradise', this was then distributed to the UK and the US television stations when Bennet later claimed he had created the first music video. In the 1960's a device known as the Scopitone was invented in France. A Scopitone is a visual jukebox and as a result short films where produced by french artists such as Serge Gainsbourg and Jacques Dutronc to accompany there songs. Similar devices in other countries where developed such as the Cinebox in italy and the Colour- Sonic in the USA. This encouraged artists to create music videos and gave them a means of distributing them to there audience.

One of the definitive if not the definitive development to music videos came from The Beatles in 1964 when they created there first motion picture 'A hard days night'. The musical segments of the motion picture arguably created the basis and the format of which most of todays musicians follow.
In America from 1966 to 1968 a TV series called The Monkees (based on the Beatles 'A hard days night') was another significant development to the modern day music video. Each episode contained crafted segments that included The Monkees songs.

The Beatles took The development of Music videos to knew highest of development once again when in 1967 they released the films "strawberry fields' and 'Penny Lane'. These videos featured a new style of avant guard filming such as reverse film effects, dramatic lighting and on the beat editing. This was done to show the music in a more artistic manner.

Improvements in the video recording process and the Editing process, as well as effects in the modern era have been key to innovative development in music videos. The introduction of high quality portable cameras inspired a new ethos of DIY promotional videos. this means that Pop acts ect can create music videos quickly and cheaply. By the mid 80's releasing a music video to accompany an artists song had become standard.

The 1970's is deemed the modern era of the music video, with the introduction of the UK's Top Of The Pop's creating a competition amongst artists, record labels and producers. With strict limits on the number of music videos that Top Of The Pop's was able to show this refined the number of videos so only the best where shown, the better the video the more sales the more advertisement.

In 1981 MTV was launched, the first music video it played was The Buggels 'Video killed the radio star'.

In the mid 1980's ARtists and products started to use better effects and made videos more sophisticated by adding story lines and plots. Michael jackson was one of the first artists to use the concept of the short film ( i.e. his music video had a beginning, middle and an end). We can see this  in the 1984 Music video Thriller .

Music video's today are appreciated as an art form in there own right, not just as an advertisement method to sell an artists music. Many people actually enjoy the visual aspect of certain videos more so then the music that accompanies it. A growing trend in the music industry is to focus purely on the artist rather then the quality of music, this is with the aim of creating the image of been cool in most males and sexualising females to create interest.

The Libertines are a band from London formed by Carl Barat and (vocalist/guitarist) and Pete Doherthy (vocalist/guitarist) in 1997, they met when studying Drama at Burnel University . The Libertines where at the for front ofthe garage rock revival, and in the early 2000's gained commercial success With a No 2 single and a No 1 album in the UK charts. The libertines reformed in 2010 to do a series of shows, this included Reading and leeds Festival.

The reason i have posted this video is because i like the way in which they have used snippets of film from gigs and added them together with an almost documentary style filming of the band just following them about i am not interested in using the song but i am interested in the style. This is something i could look to do with one of hull's local bands, following them to gig and filming ect. The band i am looking to do this with is The Tennents.

The Mystery Jets- Young Love (featuring laura marling)

The Mystery Jets are a British indie rock/ phychedelic rock band that originate from Twickenham, London. The band members are Blaine Harrison, William Rees, Kapil Trivedi, Peter Cochrane, Kieran Morrisson and Henry Harrisson. The band formed in 2004 and are signed to 679 Records. The name of the band originated from a news headline featured in The Evening Standard (' The Misery Jets') however it only became The Mystery Jets after the drummer had misspell the name whilst painting it on his drum skin.

My reasons for posting this video is because i am fond of the song featuring Laura Marling and it is potentially a song i could use for my video. however more so then that i likes the way in which they shot the video and the use of text. seeing this video has created new artistic ideas as to how i should approach my music video. For example the idea of adding snippets of animation?.

The Cribs- Be Safe

The Cribs have not actually made a Video for the Song 'Be safe', however i have found another internet users interpretation of the song that he composed for his final project at university.

The Cribs are a British indie rock band from Wakefield, the band members consist of twins Ryan and Garry Jarmin and there younger brother Ross Jarmin. The cribs where formed in late 2001 when after a number of gigs and recordings they realised a split 7 single under the predominantly punk label squirrel records. however after a few high profile support slots they decided in 2004 to sign with independent label Wichita Records. The first recording with Witchita records had a stripped back, rough and kitchen sink feel. this is something the band has maintained throughout there albums and is partly the reason that i enjoy there music so much. The Cribs unrefined raw approach to music makes for a more interesting less commercial song, this therefore supports the genre of indie rock and its associations with individuality and striving to avoid mainstream charts .
1. A promotion package for the release of an album, to include a music promo video, together with the two of the following three options:

  • a website homepage for the band;
  • a cover for its release as part of a digipak (CD/DVD package);
  • a magazine advertisement for the digipak (CD/DVD package).
